Garmin Paid a Multi-million Dollar Ransom After Cyberattack: Report

Smartwatch maker Garmin paid a multi-million-dollar ransom to hackers who encrypted its knowledge, in line with a report. This news comes virtually two weeks after Garmin was the sufferer of a ransomware assault that affected its units globally. In ransomware assaults, hackers encrypt a company’s information till a ransom is paid. Security sources say that the cyberattack was developed by people who’ve hyperlinks to Evil Corp, a cyber group in Russia which was sanctioned by the US Government last year.

As per a report by Sky News, Garmin didn’t instantly pay the ransomware to the hackers. Instead, it employed Arete IR for its ransomware negotiation providers to make the multi-million greenback ransom cost. The US authorities had sanctioned Evil Corp in December, saying that US individuals have been prohibited from partaking in transactions with the 17 people and 7 enterprise entities linked to Evil Corp, even within the case of extortion.

Arete IR, nonetheless, said that it believed WastedLocker, a ransomware virus related to the assault, was not conclusively the work of Evil Corp.
