Greece makes masks compulsory on ferry decks after rise in COVID-19 cases

Greece will make mask-wearing compulsory on the decks of ferries crusing to its islands, extending the requirement past indoor public areas, after a sudden rise in coronavirus infections that might put its essential tourism season in danger.

Greece reported 110 new cases on Saturday, its highest single-day improve in a number of weeks. Another 75 confirmed cases have been reported on Sunday.

“Compliance with this measure is crucial to avoid more drastic measures that would reduce passenger-load limits on ships,” authorities spokesman Stelios Petsas informed reporters.

The new measure will go into impact from Tuesday till Aug. 18, because the summer time vacation season hits its peak.

Greece has thus far confirmed 4,662 COVID-19 cases and 208 deaths, a comparatively low quantity in contrast with many European international locations, after imposing a lockdown in the spring. But charges have been creeping up after a lull from late May to late July.

Cyprus said on Sunday it might introduce compulsory testing for all arrivals from Greece from Aug. 6. The jap Mediterranean island is regarded as the primary nation to require exams on arrivals from Greece for the reason that lockdown eased.

“It is a decision which personally I don’t understand, I believe it is wrong or at least I don’t know the criteria on which it was based,” Greek Tourism Minister Harry Theocharis informed Parapolitika radio.

“I hope there will be some sort of communication, some understanding between epidemiologists from both sides,” he said, including that Greece is a secure nation.

Tourism is a key driver of Greece’s economic system which is seen shrinking as much as 10 % this year and is slowly rising from a decade of debt disaster. Greece is a well-liked vacation vacation spot for 1000’s of Cypriots.
