The faces of hope: Footballer who tackled poverty stars in British Vogue’s September issue

Footballer Marcus Rashford, whose campaigning pushed the federal government to alter coverage on free college meals, has received additional recognition for his poverty-fighting efforts – starring on the duvet of a British Vogue version celebrating Black leaders.

British Vogue’s editor-in-chief, Edward Enninful, said he requested Harriman to take the photographs for September’s version after seeing his work photographing London’s Black Lives Matter protests in June.

Enninful, who turned the journal’s first Black editor in 2017, said subsequent month’s version can be “a rallying cry for the future”. All 26 of Vogue’s worldwide editions are dedicating their covers to the theme of hope.

“British Vogue’s September issue is our show of thanks. When all is said and done, it’s clear that 2020 will be remembered as a tough year, but also as a moment of necessary change. The future starts now,” Enninful wrote in an article for the version.

The September issue additionally features a fold-out web page that includes 20 “inspirational faces” in Black Lives Matter such because the motion’s co-founder Patrisse Cullors, BBC Radio 1 DJ Clara Amfo and best-selling creator Reni Eddo-Lodge.

In June, Black fashions, stylists and trend photographers took to social media to post their own variations of Vogue covers in a name for larger range in the style trade.

Vogue’s editor-in-chief, Anna Wintour, has apologised for errors made by the journal in the previous.

“I want to say plainly that I know Vogue has not found enough ways to elevate and give space to Black editors, writers, photographers, designers and other creators,” she said in June.
